Latest Game Revision and Known Issues: August 12th

Postby weasel on Tue Aug 12, 2008 12:18 pm

Hey everyone!

Pacifist churned out another update today! Time to party! :D

This one does change the behavior of the game in certain circumstances; some of your more delicate contraptions may need to be tweaked to get working again.

Features/Changes:
  • Sticks that are shorter than the default minimum length no longer expand when you hit GO. This means you can make really sexy chains, like this one (If that URL shows a breaking chain, you have the old version!). If your contraption - by design, or inadvertantly - was using too-short-sticks, it's behavior will change. Apologies for this, but this fix must go through!
  • Because sticks no longer expand, it's no longer possible to use that glitch to build into terrain or out of the building area box.
  • Back-end updates for security and potential portability to other environments (portal sites, etc)

Known Issues:
  • Inconsistent replays do still rarely occur, and are being investigated. Though most are attributed to contraptions being made in previous versions, there have been a few reported incidents of older/more obscure processors making small changes in your levels outcome (original thread for this bug)
  • Contraptions have been hard-capped at around 120 parts, for both level-parts and contraption-parts. There is no error message or visual indication, parts will simply not be placed above this limit. This is a temporary stopgap measure to prevent a database corruption bug with very big designs. This should be resolved shortly.
  • Very rarely there will be a database glitch when processing your paypal transaction. If you have paid for the game and have not received your access within a few minutes, please forward your paypal receipt to sales@fantasticcontraption.com .
  • Physics will sometimes "freak out" and send your contraption into a conniption! This is usually because of a glitch in the physics system, usually when you use excessive numbers of sticks/rods connected to wheels. Try to simplify your designs to prevent this from happening!
  • Rediculous numbers of rods in a level may cause the contraption to just "fall apart," or even worse, go into "black hole mode." These are odd little bugs that will hopefully get fixed soon - again, just simplify to avoid it!

You will have to clear your browser cache to get the updated copy. Visit this thread if you don't know how.

wow. That chain is sexy

That does mean that the short water chains will now break really easily...

One other thing.. it is a little weird that the default behavior for wood rods is the centimeter long wood piece, while the default behavior for water rods is for it to be as long as your mouse drags.

I'm getting something where if I use the space bar to start or stop while dragging to move the camera it glitches out and sticks the movement on, though all I have to do to fix it is click somewhere in the window. I've never had this before, so I assume it was caused by the patch. Ah, the joys of patches, fixing one thing and breaking another... :D

I seem to have lost all my saved contraptions, is that an issue with the update?

Nice! Some day I hope we get a sexy-chain-making tool, but this is good enough for now. Thanks Pacifist!

Yes, I really have to get on that 120 parts thing.

I lost a bunch of today playing Armadillo Run.

There is a certain irony in procrastinating working on your physics puzzle game by playing a physics puzzle game.

And I in turn spent today playing your game when I could have been a) working or b) completing the physics flash game I started a year ago

I wonder if this is a cycle of time wasting or just a chain, such that one person is responsible for the rest of us wasting time. :P

I bet it's a chain. Peters Stock probably wasted all his time playing bridge builder and Alex Austin probably blew all his time playing the incredible machine.

I wonder what Kevin Ryan spent his time playing... Lemmings?

Water rods are being unstable... case in point: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=398748

Only rods, but it can rock itself out of the goal area.

And this is why we don't make water chains to go against world objects :D

There's definitely a few of these quirks in the physics, like this where balls never succumb to friction: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=416953

But hey, it's a game and it doesn't have to be perfect! Just accept and plan for these types of situations and they can make the game more interesting...

Pascifist, did you allow the game to be posted on addicting games?

Just a heads up, in case you didn't know :)

Yes, I did. Like, forever ago. They have a really old version now. I should get them to pop in a newer one.

Thanks for the heads-up!

(also sorry for the brief server outage there. it was a ram upgrade)

I'm having a weird issue with rods, is there something I need to do differently? It just pulls right through my wheel.
