Avatars Enabled; Signature Images Disabled

Postby weasel on Wed Sep 03, 2008 4:47 pm

Hey everyone,

I've just enabled Avatars! Hooray. I really hate how signature images extend the posting displays, so I've disabled images in signatures. I might eventually turn off signatures altogether. We'll see how we go with this.

Your current signatures will stay in place but I'm hoping people will slowly whittle them down and remove them altogether. After a few days I will start actively nuking old signatures as I see them.

Huzzah! I much prefer my universal avatar to the signature picture I made for these forums.

Code: Select all
.signature img { display: none; }

or...
Code: Select all
.signature { max-height: 40px; overflow: hidden }

* The latter doesn't do anything in IE6.

Their problem. =|

What if I made my image small? Would that be fine? And better yet, allow CSS in signatures :roll:
Code: Select all
[div=float:right]blahblahblah[/div]

Couldn't you just limit the amount of lines in the signature, as well as image size? (like, 4 lines maximum and 100x250 max)

Glad to see it. I hate sig pics. I only made one because I was allowed to and very proud of myself for that contraption. I'll get mine out of there tomorrow and get myself and avatar.

EDIT: you seem to have done it for me. Awesome less work for WhyT.

I think you should still allow a few lines of text in the signature. I like it when people like Hap had a link to his levels there. And people were putting their awards.

Aye, disabling signatures entirely may be a bit of overkill...

The problem is you can't limit signatures to a few lines; you can only limit the number of characters. So:

Code: Select all
This
!
!
!
!
!

would still be possible even with extreme limitations. I don't want to have to manage that.

There's no native way to do it, no.. might be a mod I can find eventually? There's these "custom fields" things I could maybe do. I'll have to fiddle around with it.

How 'bout making awards an automatic [check here] feature that is either on or off. As for links to levels, haven't I heard of a way of only allowing links that start with a certain http? ex: only allow links to sites that start with "http://fantasticcontraption.com/", or better yet, make that hard-entered and allow users to put the lvlid=?... in a box?

I think it does matter quite a bit. Nothing's more annoying than scrolling through two people's conversations, each post alternating the same two signatures, when the signature files are twice as tall as the actual message text.

I *don't* mind a single line of small text describing your accomplishments or whatever, but I can only limit people by character length, not number of lines. Ie,

"Writing a long signature like this"

is equivalent to

"w
r
i
t
i
n
g

a

l
o
n
g

s
i
g
n
a
t
u
r
e".

I can also ban those people and/or edit their sigs, but that's more work for me. I don't like doing more work.

I'm looking into a plugin to put descriptive text of your choosing under your avatar. I'm cool with that.
