Free Level "Long Way" Badge Challenge!

Postby saek on Wed Oct 01, 2008 5:15 pm

I searched the forums and couldn't find this. This challenge is called Longway. As you might have guessed the point is to simply NOT go straight to the goal. You must carry/pass/throw the object around a solid GREEN obstacle, maybe even UNDER THE LEVEL. This essentially makes every level completely new. The longer the way you go the better. NO GLITCH BULLETS.

EXAMPLE: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2393905

-----------------Long way completions, compiled by kdausman---------------

kdausman wrote:Current status of the challenge: EVERY LEVEL HAS BEEN SOLVED AT LEAST ONCE! Well done, everyone!

I will be listing solutions that are qualitatively different (e.g. going around different fixed obstacles). Where solutions achieve the same goal, only the first submitted will be listed. Several of the problems were solved in a collaborative fashion by exchanging designs on this message board; the final solution will be listed first, and the contributors will be listed after. Please let me know of any corrections.

Edit: I have added the list of what is left to be done to the end of this post.

1. Rolling Away
2. Reach Up
3. Mind the Gap
4. Junkyard
5. The Wall
6. On a Roll
7. Full Up
8. Higher
9. Around the Bend
10. Up the Hump
11. Mission to Mars
12. Up the Stairs
13. Big Ball
14. Four Balls
15. Down Under
16. Awash
17. Handling
18. Tube
19. Back and Forth
20. Unpossible
  • Over the left obstacle (right to left): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=3201035 (kdausman. Original design by kdausman, modified by GH69 to a success on his computer that was unfortunately not reproducible on anyone elses, so GH69 deserved a moral victory. kdausman tweaked it to a true solution.)
  • Over the left obstacle (left to right): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=4663670 (1 gandalf 55. Original design by 1 gandalf 55, partially rebuilt by kdausman, and finally solved by 1 gandalf 55)
21. U-Turn

The levels not yet solved at all are: None! Way to go, everyone!

And here are a selection of specific solutions that haven't yet been found (many are probably impossible):

Rolling Away: Underground, left-to-right over the left obstacle, or around the right obstacle.
Reach Up: Around the far-right rectangle counterclockwise.
Mind the Gap: Under the right half of the ground.
Junkyard: In between the two levels?
The Wall: Over both obstacles.
On a Roll: Around all three upper obstacles or underground.
Full Up: I don't see anything left to do on this one.
Higher: Right-to-left over the upper obstacle or underground.
Around the Bend: Over the upper obstacle left to right, or underground.
Up the Hump: Underground.
Mission to Mars: Around the right obstacle, then the left obstacle, and then into the .
Up the Stairs: Underground.
Big Ball: Underground.
Four Balls: Lots left to do...
Down Under: Figure 8 around the two obstacles.
Awash: Underground.
Handling: Anything left on this one?
Tube: Over the whole thing and then back up the middle.
Unpossible: Underground.
U-turn: Around the whole thing.

7.Over the middle circle then around the right sqauare counterclockwise on Mind the Gap http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=8597099 Originally it was to be around the right square only by me, tweaks by Zhyrek but Zhyrek redesigned it to be a new long way

8. around the upper most object then back down through the tube on u-Turn http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=8588566 Put together by me and ~Jon~, tweaks by zhyrek, Asks, and Patacoman

Rest of original post:

Here's a list of what I consider -a- Longway for each level. Follow along with an extra browser window for reference:

1. Rolling Away - Around one of the three structures. Maybe wrap around the top right with a catapult + chain.
2. Reach Up - Easy to qualify, but you get bonus Awesome points for going around more than just the circle...
3. Mind the Gap - Easy to qualify obviously , but try getting around the top right small square.
4. Junkyard - Ouch... have to go under. Hint: Two machines, one to get down and throw it, one that will move forward to catch the ball.
5. The Wall - Not too bad. Get over that blocky island without scoring first. Harder would be the roundy island.
EDIT: yellow loose obstacles don't count.
6. On a Roll - Catapult and chain around one of the upper things. Or back up and go over the obstacle behind you.
7. Full Up - Easy, over the ball. But if you figure a way to go under this level, you will be a god!
8. Higher - Over the upper obstacle. Harder: Ground obstacle. Hardest: BOTH.
9. Around the Bend - Not just around the center... Maybe over the ceiling and catch it on the left side?
10. Up the Hump - Around one or both of the rounds. Hardest: go under.
11. Mission to Mars - under the Earth (left side). Bonus: wrap under and over Mars (right side).
12. Up the Stairs - over the three upper obstacles. Bonus: over the first, under the second, over the third :)
13. Big Ball - Over the tilted ramp-like obstacle and/or the flat one. Or under the ground, of course...
14. Four Balls - Has to be under... You are Contraption King if you get this one.
15. Down Under - Around the bottom obstacle. Harder: Around the bottom, then around the top again.
16. Awash - Over the crooked upper obstacle. Harder: Underground.
17. Handling - Over the T. Or around the stuff behind you. Or under of course.
18. Tube - Possibly the hardest there is. Out the bottom and around the side. Hint: Two machines, one crawls up.
19. Back and Forth - Around one or both of the floating obstacles.
20. Unpossible - Already a hard level, now you have to get the ball around the upper left obstacle, or under the ground.
21. U-Turn - The two obvious paths don't count. Have to go around something.

Some are easy with catapults and others will require downright ingenious solutions involving multiple machines. This could also be called the "Too Much Time On Your Hands" Challenge. Good Luck!

Although quite elegant and super awesome, the two solutions thus far for The Wall don't count. Sorry my wording meant the Green obstacles that are blockly looking.

xan499, I've seen some pretty crazy contraptions here that I would have never thought of. And like I said, for the under ones my first idea would be to send a machine backward to throw it under, and a machine forward designed to catch the object and reel it back to the goal. Sure some levels seem impossible, but unlike other challenges none are completely out of the question.

this definantly qualifies because of what it does afterwards and before it reaches the goal

Reach Up

Full Up

Up the Hump Bank Shot

(A catapult to go over the green circle to left was done months ago.)

Up the Stairs
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1651859

If you prefer, you can tweak the trajectory on UTS and go around all of the environment pieces and through the goal without touching any of the environment:

Be happy that you are the one to come up with a way to get the target to the upper level. But even if the target dropped back on the lower level, the CW wheel would drag it away from the goal.

Here's my tweak that gets the target away from the lifting rig:
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2447904

You will need something to go under the wall and catch the target if you want to get closer to solving this.

Going around the T on Handling is gonna be tough, maybe over the dots on the left will be easier. Here's what I got for a prototype catching machine that scores.

http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2448857

Here's a system for moving a basket to the other side of the dots, and a car to pull the basket back to goal area.

http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2455304

But yeah, that lifter up to the top of the T is crazy! All we gotta do is either modify the goal object so it falls in the goal side, or put a catcher over there. gonna need a way to stand it up though.

PS. Excellent OAR 2-obstacle, sccook! One more obstacle and you'll be the OAR Longway King. In a day or two I will start compiling the best entries and put them in the main post.
