Speed Running 1-20

Postby flagitious on Sun Aug 17, 2008 11:30 am

When seeking a best solution, what does that mean? I say it means, few number of pieces, runs fast, and stable (having a high chance of working despite slight mangling).

A single segment speed run encourages finding "best" solutions, so I gave it a try. After some thinking about methods, practice, and tries, I got 4:50. Here is the video for that:

If anyone is interested in making their own attempt, I recommend using camstudio with xvid codec (both free). This was the first time I ever recorded my sceen, and it was actually really easy to do using those tools (however those weren't the first things I tried unfortunately).

It might be too much of a time investment to try to master all levels, but you can still contribute designs for individual levels and I will try to incorporate them into the run. There are probably many clever ways of doing
levels that I have not thought of.

That was awesome. Those simple catapults you are using are really effective.

I don't think I have seen that solution to four balls before.

Thanks, here were some other methods for 4 balls

They are pretty nifty but not perfectly consistent, the first fails like 30% of the time if you change things slightly, the second is even worse.

The simplest solutions challenge also had 3 pieces for 4 balls, but it's different and runs slower.

I got 4:29, video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxE08qsQ ... h_response

Any design suggestions still helpful. Even minor stuff adds up.

Curious why you build at the bottom of 'tube'. Seems you could get 2-3 seconds just by building at the top

Hey thanks, I'll try to keep that in mind on next attempt. I need to make another to include level 21 now, but I am rusty since being on vacation without a computer.

http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1193508 this wouldn't be a bad type of design for a speed run at lvl 21

Looks like his tube design needs to hit bottom before ascending. I may be wrong though.

Well, I was looking at Unpossible... that seems to be your weakest link at 0:35 time to completion.

I think something like this might work better for you (quicker to build and quicker solution) if you can get it consistent enough.
