Lightweight Free Levels Challenge!

Postby Skips on Sun Jul 12, 2009 10:25 am

We've solved all of the free levels to the minimum pieces in Simplest Solutions
We've solved all of the free levels to the minimum speed in Free levels Speed challenge
Now we must complete all of these in the minimum weight using http://fantasticcontraption.com/design? ... statistics

I've compiled the minimum so far, mostly from Simplest Badge Records, but not all. The weight will be rounded to 2 decimal places, so incredibily minor changes will not count, but if the change is substantial enough it will be added.

Tiebreaker: Mass/Pieces/Ticks/Level ID

1 - Rolling Away - 0 - Many Users
2 - Reach Up - 672.31 - Linkzcap (NightStryke)
3 - Mind the Gap - 446.92 - Skips (samoo*)
4 - Junkyard - 1642.61 - Chaos
5 - The Wall - 2381.24 - spooned
6 - On a Roll - 642.49 - minisimp (timewarp)
7 - Full-up - 1488.77 - redreoicy
8 - Higher - 1766.02 - chris4a4 (Skips & WizBang)
9 - Around the Bend - 0 - Many Users
10 - Up the Hump - 1951.07 - IGLima (Skips)
11 - Mission to Mars - 1277.66 - EddieMontage (rabid squirrel)
12 - Up the Stairs - 2750.87 - DMarden117 (Skips)
13 - Big Ball - 2518.79 - ironmano
14 - Four Balls - 4270.17 - ironmano (samoo*)
15 - Down Under - 1021.52 - samoo* (obn)
16 - Awash - 1845.58 - Maestro (goran)
17 - Handling - 1454.25 - chunkatuff
18 - Tube - 2001.94 - Goreschach
19 - Back and Forth - 3816.17 - ironmano (BSG & {???})
20 - Unpossible - 3757.45 - WizBang (Empirical & Kalma)
21 - U-turn - 3724.29 - chris4a4 (MrZNF)

Total Weight: 40,000+ mass units

This challenge will probably drop like a stone due to the minimum solutions being very light (due to the lack of pieces), but for levels such as Mind the Gap, there are 3 possibilities:

1 piece brown http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=8512264 - 1079.50 mass units
2 piece water http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=1413474 - 1020.10 mass units
5 piece brown http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=7672714 - 506.68 mass units

So a solution with 3 more pieces halves the weight.

Now, help these contraptions lose weight!

Why would anyone think it is a good idea to bang your head finding a design that is one millionths of a unit lighter than the last. Tweaking for hours kills me enough without having to do a "query" every time I get a design that might or might not be a tiny bit smaller than the last.

Do you want to make this thread really interesting? I volunteer my services to calculate a separate leader board for person who has spent the most time reducing the mass of designs with the least success. If you could just post how many hours you spent mindlessly tweaking designs I will do the rest.

Good luck everyone!

I'm sure eventually it will come to a point where only 1 unit or so will come off, but at the moment, ironmano removed lots of weight from 2 solutions, and it's a lot easier to tell if something is lighter or not. If you don't like the idea of trying to reduce the weight then you don't have to contribute.

http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=8584983 - Higher - 1798.03798497 mass units.

Now someone go take 1 or 2 mass units off at a time.

To be honest, when I began to write that post I really didn't like the idea of the challenge, but as I wrote I realized how much fun it will be watching you spin your way to insanity trying to reduce your designs pixel by pixel. So tell me how long you spend moving things minimally.

Check out this cool design I came up with: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=8585000 - 1797.2379863334 mass units. Thats right, its less than .8 units lighter.
