Challenges and Games - Extending your gameplay experience since 2008

Remember those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books? Well, now try to imagine that concept combined with Fantastic Contraption.

In this game I'll create levels that have more than 1 "exit". Basically, solutions with easy paths, difficult paths, and even more difficult paths. Depending on what path you take, you will then practice self discipline and head over to where the screen leaves off in the next level, or skip to whatever level it tells you to (while still following where the screen leaves off)

confused? probably because I'm not very good at explaining things! go ahead and take a look at the first level.
Notice how there are two obvious paths to victory. A simple one, and a more difficult one. Depending on what path you take, you would follow that path in the next level and only build in that area. Obviously you can visit the levels in any order and build in any path, but that would ruin the spirit of the game!

Thoughts? Comments? Questions? silly idea that I shouldn't put effort into?

Depending on the reactions to this idea is what determines if I continue with this idea or not

General Rules:
1. Start off in the same place you left off in the previous level.
2. If you'd like, you can create extra Powerless Wheels to act as "partners" to explore other parts of the cave during your adventure for a more interesting experience and more loot!
3. You may go back to the previous level and path to attempt to take another path if your current one is too difficult.
4. If there's no number that tells you which level to go to, just assume it's the next numerical level.

SCORING: At level 04 and above, you might notice little dynamic yellow brick objects. These objects are considered "gold bars" and are valued at \$100 a piece (for simplicity's sake). To "collect" them, your pink goal ball needs to touch them. In the case that you might find a large stack or pile of gold bars, touching any of the gold bars will count as collecting them all. You can collect more gold if you have more powerless wheel partners going through the cave, but you need to make it obvious which if your powered wheels are considered the "partners", perhaps by adding a piece of dangling wood or water rod to the center of it. Keep track of your total \$ in your Cave Adventure log.
Also, the tiny square specs aren't worth anything, they're just piece of rubble to try and hinder you.

Rules for Partner Wheels:
1.In order for powerless partner wheels to count, they need to be present from the very beginning of your adventure and make their way through the cave with the pink ball.
2. You may only have a maximum of 2 Powerless Partner Wheels (PPW)
3. You may want to put a tiny wood stick and water stick on your PPWs to identify them from other powerless wheels in your contraptions. This will make it easier to score loot gains
4. You cannot split up your PPWs between exits that warp to different levels.
5. You can abandon your PPWs at any time during your adventure, but you won't be able to use them for the rest of your trip.
6. In order for PPW-collected gold to count, they need to exit the level after touching the gold.

Once we reach the end of Cave Adventure, I'll give everyone a chance to finish up their adventure, and then I'll verify and tally up the loot scores so we can see who is the...

SPELUNKING MASTER

Level 02: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=15660 (FURTHER tweaked due to unintended difficulty)
Level 03: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=15409

Level 06A: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=16182
Level 06B: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=16865 (\$2000 Loot Potential) [changed the level id because I forgot the pink ball ]
Level 07: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=16884
Level 08: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=16968 (forgot the pink ball again )
Level 09: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=17100
obviously more to come! (These first few are just a bit of filler to get the ball rolling, they'll get more interesting, I promise )

Have fun spelunking! Depending on what paths you take, you might run into some interesting "treasure".

NEW NOTE if you have any ideas or concepts you'd like me to include somewhere in the cave, just PM me and I'll see what I can do!

Total Loot: 200\$

Level 01 (0\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1182514

What is my purpose for exploring this cave? There are a lot of rumors of valuable treasure hidden inside the cave, but to be honest I'm not really interested in it. Something else draws me to this cave...I don't know what it is yet, though. I'm sure if I run into something valuable that doesn't require too much risk, I'll pick it up. At first glance, the cave seems normal. It's dark, but various crevaces in the cave's roof allows a bit of light to shine in. Even with the decent visibility, I still have to be careful.

Level 02 (0\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1196602

Looks like there's no turning back now. I seem to have fallen into a pit and onto a large pillar of some sort. It's too dark to tell if they're man-made or not, however. Hopping from pillar to pillar to another solid landmass wasn't too difficult, but I hate to imagine what would have happened if I hadn't been so lucky as to land on one of these things.

Level 03 (0\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1197166

I think it's safe to say that these caves aren't a natural phenomenon. I seem to be crawling over some pyramid-like structures. Had to cross another bottom-less pit. I tried to throw a stone into it, but never heard a sound. Better just count my blessings and move on.

Level 04 (200\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1197470

It's official, a lot of the structures in this cave are definitely man-made. I even found what appeared to be some solid gold items! I picked up two and was about to pick up a third, until I accidently fell into a pit! I seem to be okay though. I fell onto some sort of pile which broke my fall. Wait, what is all this...?

Level 05 (0\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1198998

Is this some sort of dungeon? How am I supposed to get out of here...?

Level 06A (0\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1220649

So it's pretty obvious that I took the wrong path, since I ended up falling into a room with a moving wall trap. After a few moments of panicking, I jumped into another pitfall without any second thoughts. It seemed safe down here, so I took a few moments to catch my breath. I then proceeded into the next chamber with caution.

Level 07 (0\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1263679 (had the wrong ID before)

I've heard rumors about strange six-legged creatures that roam inside the caves that devour anyone who dare explore their cavernous home. But how would people know about them if they're all supposed to be eaten? Sometimes when I setup camp to rest, I can hear the echoing of what seem to be hurried footsteps far inside the cave. I wonder if those are the sound of those beasts, other explorers, or something else...?

Level 08 (0\$ Loot): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1269642

That was an amazing experience! Just as I thought I got to a part of the cave that seemed safe, a large boulder began hurdling towards me from the path ahead! There weren't many options at this point. Nowhere to run, and I sure wasn't going to be able to hurdle over it. There was only one way out of this one. It was incredibily risky but I had no choice. I planted my feet firmly and hunched my shoulders foward...I braced myself and attempted to catch the boulder and push it back! I guess I'm stronger than I thought, because I actually managed to stop it and stay on my feet. I slid back quite a bit though, but I managed to stop it completely. I wasn't really sure what to do at this point. I wasn't able to go back into the previous chamber, so I decided to try and push the thing back up the passage. It took a while to get it completely over the hill, but I managed somehow. I think I'm going to rest for now...

I'll be using this post to track my own progress in my cave adventure! I would advise all other spelunkers to do the same so we can share our triumphs and progress in the cave!

Cave Log
Me and my friends are exploring this newlyfound cave and the first obstical we face a tight squeze. As we barely make it through I notice a path above us. We decide to keep going straight...

We countinue on and repel down a rock wall, only to find ourselfs barely not falling between some platforms! As I peek over the edge I see no bottom. Carefully we Climb from platform to platform making it to a new area...

This next area is pretty big. As I scan the room I see 3 rooms. The very bottom path looked too risky so I took the middle path. I used my grappleing hook and swung across. I'll stay here for tonight...

As I continue farther I find pillars with gold bars on top! I quickly gather all of the gold and got out of there as fast as I could, In case there were any booby traps. Unfortunately I fell down a hole...

What the?... as I look around I see tourches already lit, A giant skull, and I'm stepping on some dead people.
I quickly get out of that bowl o' bones, only to find myself on treading carefully over some spikes! Then I repel down the skull and decide to take the right path. What is this? ...

### 6ft9's Log

My friends all told me I was crazy for doing this trip. After all, I'm a big man and I'm going to be crawling through some tiny holes. But, let's face it. Everyone craves adventure. The treck through the wilderness was more about combating vegetation and mosquitos than finding oneself. Of course, my guides warned me more than once about the possibility of bandits. But I think that was just to make things interesting. We reached the cavesite rumored to hold Coronado's treasure but the original entrance to the cavenetwork had disappeared some time in the last few years under a landslide. My maps were useless. We were about to give up and head back when we found another site that looks like it'd opened up by the same landslide. We set up base camp and we'll be leaving some of the crew back to harvest materials in case we need them. We'll start out at first light in the morning.

Day 1, 8:00 hrs.
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1207955

The entrance of the cave was promising. The air smelled sweet and there was evidence of small animal inhabitants, likely rats and bats. The floor of the cave was remarkably even and well-worn. It looks like someone used this cave a lot, even if it wasn't anytime recent. A couple of large spiderwebs with dead bats confirmed our suspicions. We came to a split vertical shaft that bisected the tunnel. I argued with my guides to attempt the upward climb but they pointed out just how narrow it seemed to get up there and that we didn't want to exhaust resources that way in case it was just a dead end. We decided to bridge the chasm to make coming back easier and we laid a pair of roped up logs that some of the guys brought up so that we could send people back for supplies.

Day 1, 10:00 hrs.
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1208361

A surprise met us at the end of the shaft. It opened up into a massive cavern cross-cut with deep chasms. We had to shoot a few flares before we saw what looked like an exit in the far end. There was a deep drop down first, however, and we used ropes to lower ourselves down. It wasn't until we reached the bottom that we saw the remains of a crudely cut ladder in the wall. Someone obviously had been here long before. It looked more and more promising.

Getting across the chasms was a bit of work. We decided against sending people back to bridge each individual chasm as the vertical climb would be both arduous and time consuming. Instead, we improvised with ropes, using them to create a network of two-line short bridges along the cave wall. It worked out quite well up until the end. The walls were crumbly and we had to laso a large stalacmite that looked like it would hold. With a few pitons holding the other end, we crawled across it slowly until we reached the end. We decided to take a rest after that leg.

Day 1, 13:00 hrs.
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1208745

This cave seems rife with chasms. Every new room we come to seems to be crossed with them. It's obvious that this cave was riddled with seismic activity. Probably of the same sort that burried and later reopened the cave network. This chasm was massive. Getting across it required us using as much ingenuity as we could muster. But, the biggest thing to note was that standing between the upper two levels. One of the guides says it looks like it may have once been a carved face. Looking at it in the light, the rest of us agreed, though by now hundreds of years of limestone erosion has obliterated any of the natural features. Maybe this was not Coronado's cave, but used as a temple by the indegenous peoples. We're not sure.

We figured the only way to get across the cavern was to improvise a swing. Rigging a make-shift catapult device, we propelled a large grapple across. It took a few tries, but with the rope attached, we were able to make the swing across. It was precarious for the lead guide when the grapple shifted. But he made it through, even if with slightly damper slacks.

Day 1, 15:00 (Loot: \$500)
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1209026

I can't believe it! We found an amazing treasure trove. In what was clearly a man-made cavern, we came across 5 pedestals, upon each of which rested a large gold disc. Each disc held an image of a face, each one slightly different. I'm almost sure that they're from a looted or lost civilization and that they represent the multiple aspects of a deity or king. But, the value of them must be immense. If we can find more of these discs, I could retire a millionarie! We hurried ahead to the next cavern in hopes of finding more.

Day 1, 19:00 (6B)
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1210351

This confirmed it. The previous rooms were just a prelude to this chamber. We came to a bone-pit of what were likely previous adventurer types or even sacrifices. Crossing a precarious bridge with missing pieces over a wickedly spiked pit, we came into room that suffered no limestone erosion. The gigantic idol was very evident and the phosphorescent lichens gave it a very angry, fearful look. Searching the room, we found a large hidden door and decided that there was likely treasure behind it. It took all of our combined might as well as an impressive lever contraption that the engineer came upwith to get the doors open, but we did. It looks like we'll need to push it a bit further before we can get wholly past it, though. But I'm confident we can do it. However, we felt that it was too late to continue and so we found a corner of the room to set up camp and rest for the night. I'm very excited to find out what's behind that doorway.

Day 1, 23:
http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1233924 (did it just cuz)

Had a dream that I'd wandered down the other passage and what horrible trap awaited. I swear, I kept restarting the dream, trying to find a way past that moving wall until I finally made it and the excitement woke me up from my slumber. I think my girlfriend is right: I need to cut back on the caffinated beverages before bed.

Total: 5 rectangles

1. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1210563

I found myself outside a vibrant green cave with the handy label "Cave Adventure" tacked onto a corner of it, so, like any good red ball, I attached myself to some wheels and headed toward one of those big pink rectangles. After many unsuccessful attempts at getting to the one with the big "2" next to it, I just took the other one.

2. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1210896

Room 1 began with a long fall, which wouldn't be a problem were it not for that tiny yellow square that kept getting stuck in my wheels. After eventually overcoming that obstacle, hopping over the big green rectangles and the small, floating square was a simple matter. The path above me that I tried so hard to get through taunted me the entire time...

3. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1211059

Room 2 had three pink rectangles - oh the choices! It was also the perfect place to employ an overly-complex catapult system with which I attempted to launch myself into the tiny opening on the bottom, but I ended up hitting the second one; I just took my win and kept on rolling.

4. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1211192

In Room 3 I found many of the little yellow rectangles we red balls use for currency, so I excitedly constructed myself a platform, attached myself to some wheels, and headed off to touch - I mean, collect them, then fall into the pink rectangle.

5. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1211569

In Room 4 I would have fallen into a pit of tiny yellow squares and orange balls were it not for the platform and carrier I built during my fall, which secured me in place then took me across teetering yellow rectangles, over a ledge and into a large orange ball before flipping over and pushing two more large yellow rectangles out of the way before dropping into the pink rectangle. Convenient!

Sorry for the wait, but here's Level 06B: http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=16865 (changed the ID since I forgot the pink ball )

I kind of feel bad, cause I think I could have done so much more with this, so I kind of witheld it for a bit. But I gave it some thought and figured there could be so much more to the cave so I don't feel too bad about it.

This is more of a bonus level to see how much golds you can rack up before you leave. Trying to collect all the gold in this level should definitely give you something to do until I release the rest of the levels, and if you're confused about the "9", it just means that the next screen below goes directly to level 9. Also don't worry about missing potential treasure from the other path, because the other path will actually have less than going through this room.

I just have one question: Where's the Red Ball...er, I mean, the Explorer? He seems to be missing from the cave.

So, if I send the explorer and his friend into separate tunnels and both make it to the next zone, can I build in both zones and continue to move the blue explorer through the cave?

correct!

that's the only way (unless you're super awesome and good) to get most of the potential loot that you'll see in the cave.

but you can't send a blue partner into an exit that leads to another level that the pinkball isn't going to. Example would be on Level 05, you can't have the pink ball go left and a blue explorer go right. if those exits led to the same level it would be alright. but on level 3, where there's 3 different exits to the same level, you can try to get 2 blues into two of the other exits and the pink into the other, that way you can get all the loot on level 4, etc.

you just need to have the PPWs (powerless partner wheels) present from level 1 and on. You can abandon the PPWs at any time during your adventure, but you won't be able to use them for the rest of the trip.

also, level 7 posted...got to catch up to all you jerks who took the altnerate route; didn't think it would be so easy
