Awesome Catapult

Postby rianbay812 on Fri Nov 26, 2010 6:42 pm

After being inspired by punkin chunkin, I wanted to see if anyone could replicate the catapult used by team "launchness monster"

Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_wcLy3_ ... r_embedded

I'll find a level too, one sec.

Here's your level! Let's see how good at replicating we can do!

jeez that catapult is freaking beast,

I remember seeing another one where the whole thing fell down a metal track and then pulted the pumpkin. You know the name of that one by any chance?

I like that one.
The weight stays on the same track and the catapult goes on the other one. hhhmmmm

Here's Launchness:
http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11289599

as yoo can c itz fairly inefficient,
considering the enormous amount of weight i put on it compared to how little it goes.

Edit:
actually, i added some torque and gave it some moar power,
but still i doubt its efficiency

I think adding a roller makes it more efficient.... BTW very cool design Jyo

You guys are doing something wrong.

Here's what I got, directly from the video:

http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11304395

Sure, the timing is off; it's supposed to shoot the other way, and the weight it sloppy. Also, bear in mind that this is a Low-weight version, and a higher-weight one would have a Sling, which would drastically increase the weight/power ratio.

This is a very simplified version, that might help. (Also, the initial start method could be used as a trigger.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKNbs5jz ... re=related

However, I'm not sure how Jyo got that design, but it doesn't seem very accurate. This sort of catapult WORKS on the fact that the weight falls a greater distance than usual, which is why a standard weight system doesn't seem to work well.

For the record, my design uses 29,227.433674366 Mass units of weight, compared to Jyo's uses 168,023.42271862.

I win.

However, I still agree that this is rather inefficient...
Here's a non-optimized using of the weight, and because it achieves a similar amount of "Fall", it has a similar amount of thrust.

Edit: Sorry if this sounds somewhat offensive. I did not mean it that way!

thnx Chris;
made me realize that the launching force is greater when itz impulsive rather than continuous:
