Yep the chain snaps are designed into the physics engine as a feature. Without it, the joints just stretch... and streeeetch... and streeeeetccch.....

players of the earlier versions will remember how parts of your contraption used to stretch for miles (at incredible tension) without snapping and it made for some very odd results.
