New Levels: The thread of excitement!

Postby weasel on Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:34 pm

I'm busy compiling a list of levels that will flesh out the game to 40ish levels. There are more levels being posted per day than I can keep up with. I need help!

The levels I'm looking for have these qualities (in order of importance):

- Multiple possible solutions
- Simple landscape design (little or no frills)
- Large-ish building area
- Small-ish overall design (there is room for huge arena-spanning challenges but the smaller the better).
- Difficulty not to exceed much more than Unpossible, or any other 1-21 level. Aim for 15-25ish.
- Clever or innovative levels are a bonus
- Levels that are badge-friendly are a bonus (the more possible badges the better)

So I'm starting up this thread to open a discussion. I'm not going to have time to play or look at every suggestion made here - but if there is a few people all agreeing that one particular level is great, I'll try it out and add it to my list.

Some of the levels I select may make it into the game. I might tweak the designs. I might use the idea and just make my own level. I might not add any levels to the game at all.

I am not starting a contest here - just a discussion thread! Contests are coming later, including one for the "big boss" end level. ;)

I strongly recommend you use sk98q's fan-made level browsing tool: http://fc.therisenrealm.com/ It's awesome!

Try this one. It fits in your requirements pretty well, though I'm not 100% sure if there are "multiple solutions".

I'm going to try and devise a few other solutions to get a better feel of this level.

Though the big orange ball doesn't move out of the green circle, levels with objects inside other objects are a no-no - it's a glitch that will be fixed at a later date and likely break any levels that use it.

I came up with these two. They are simple in design, yet not so simple to solve:

Under Cover: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?levelId=14766
Against a Wall: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?levelId=16914

Hows this? It's an adaptation of an idea i've had for a few days.

You can either hit the ball on top to make it fall down, or you can try to pull it away.
I couldn't pull it away all the time, but I did it once.

I wish I could look at these levels, my parents aren't gonna let me buy the game :argh:

I might be able to get :10bux: by more devious methods.... heheheh

But I can't wait for more official levels, including a "Boss Level!"

Too easy. So was recycling. I posted my solution on the Expand A Level thread. It was nothing but a yellow wheeled snake car.

Here is a level I built I really liked it. It has a nice challenge to get the big ball down the bottom but you have to time it just right with the ball falling from the top.

And you're complaining about other levels being too easy? Took me less than a minute: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1271121

Here are two that I came up with. The first one seems pretty popular, and there are several green and brown solutions already. Some people try to underhanded-toss it, and some have taken advantage of the floor below:
http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=16431

Here is a more difficult version of it, if that one's too easy. I don't know if there are multiple solutions, but I'm going to assume there will be by the time I check tomorrow:

I second the nomination for Entity's Home Sweet Home. It's a pretty basic concept and has many approaches. I think it fits in with the current levels well. (The goal balls do start off too close too the build area, but that's an easy fix.)

I like the simple yet non-trivial Flip the boxes that richdiesal mentioned.

blurg's The Meeting is nice as is Judicious Levity

also Size matters

Shaky bridge

Also, there should be at least one "sorting" type level included...
