Now the question becomes... which is correct?

Baned? or Banned?

When I look at the first, I see baned, pronounced bane -ed, with a soft 'a', as opposed to the second, where the second 'n' forces the 'a' to become a strong sound.

Via rules of pronunciation in the english language, I propose that Banned is the correct spelling.
