The One and Only Hap! wrote:I Officially Present
The Haphazard Competition

Ok.. I suck at coming up with names, but that is not the point.
If enough people are interested I will post 3 custom levels, and everyone who wants to play will attempt to solve each level with as few pieces as possible.
Scoring will be like golf, where the lowest score wins, and is outlined below.

Not completing a level: +90

Each rod or stick: +1
Unpowered wheels: +2
Powered wheels: +4

Achievements:
A :green: solution: -10 or 1/2 your score, whatever decreases your score the most (use no powered wheels)
A :champ: solution: -5 (keep the ball in the goal)
A :boomerang: solution: -7 (bring all goal pieces back to the start area)
A :brown: solution: -4 (only rods/sticks used)
A :clean: solution: -3 (clear all remains of your machine from the stage)
A :sweep: solution: -3 (clear all dynamics from the stage)

Prizes include

* A customized Congratulations message :!: :!:
* Honor
* One (1) miracle. only redeemable at your nearest miracle redeeming kiosk
* Three (3) good dreams no purchase necessary; consume at your own risk

People should PM me their machines so ideas aren't stolen, and I will present them at the end.
Anyhow, let me know below if you would be interested (Note, you must have paid the 10 bucks in order to play the custom levels).

The Levels

Will you go up or down the Chute? (oh shoot!)
Can you clear the Dam? (oh damn!)
Climb the mountain, and admire the view in Awe (Awww!)

The deadline will be a week from today, Friday, January 28th, at 12PM central time (USA)

When PMing me, please use the following format:
Code: Select all
Your Name
Chute: YourScore, badges
Dam: YourScore, badges
Awe: YourScore, badges

Good luck!

RESULTS!

1. ID36
Chute: -17 :green: :boomerang: :brown:
Dam: -22 :green: :champ: :boomerang: :brown:
Awe: -18 :green: :boomerang: :brown: :sweep:
Total: -57
ID36, congrats on your first win in a while. Excellent solves all around.

2. compscure
Chute: -17, :green: :brown: :boomerang:
Dam: -22, :green: :brown: :boomerang: :champ:
Awe: -17, :green: :brown: :boomerang: :sweep:
Total: -56
jompy, great effort... You and ID we're tied for a long time, but ID dropped the last point on Awe in the final hours.

3. Cruiser40
Chute -15, :green: :brown: :boomerang:
Dam -22, :green: :brown: :sweep: :champ: :boomerang:
Awe -16, :green: :brown: :clean: :sweep: :boomerang:
Total: -53
crusher, maybe you should work on dropping points instead of playing Steal the Orb or trolling Off Topic

3. cooljenny
Chute: -16, :green: :brown: :boomerang:
Dam: -21, :green: :brown: :champ: :boomerang: :sweep:
Awe: -16, :green: :brown: :boomerang: :sweep:
Total: -53
cool-j, you're really turning into quite a contraptioneer. I'd be terrified being pit against you in a comp (well, I guess we are, in bad badge... and I really am a little nervous :) )

5. Bisam
Chute -15 , :green: :brown: :boomerang:
Dam -17 , :green: :brown: :boomerang: :champ:
Awe -3 , :green: :brown: :clean: :sweep:
Total: -35
bisam, Thanks for playing, always nice to see you around these comps. Solid solves for Chute and Dam.

6. Magnum
Chute: -13, :green: :brown: :boomerang:
Dam: -15, :green: :champ: :boomerang:
Awe: 0, :green: :brown: :boomerang: :sweep:
Total: -28
mag, same deal as bisam, Awe was the main downfall! I had fun watching your solves.

7. Feste
Chute: 2, :green: :boomerang: :brown: :sweep:
Dam: 0, :green: :champ: :boomerang: :brown:
Awe: 8, :green: :brown: :sweep:
Total: 10
Feste, you got last place, but your solves we're my favorites to watch. I appreciated the effort to go down the Chute and under the Dam.

Thanks for playing, everyone. Please join Cruiser40, ID36, and myself in a jompy-hosted Hap comp featuring a level from each of us three!

Only solved one so far, but looking good. I'm afraid I can't put much effort in next week due to exams :(, but I'll look in on Friday to see Cruiser's the winner's solutions :xd:.

submitted
fun levels, jdel

edit:
I had the ID36 definition of :brown: in my head (sticks only/no water rods). definitely woulda approached one of the levels differently had I been thinking straight.
but I like these enough to stick with 'em.

locked in.

jdel, any chance we can get the next 3 levels early? ;)

The second one was easy-ish but I am having major trouble on the other two.

I revisited 3 and lost a piece. Hope it's optimal.
Probably a piece heavy or a badge light on 2.
In the weeds on 1.

Dang fun levels..

edit: out of the weeds. preferred my carpenter solve, but oh well. tweaking boom on on this one is so fun I couldn't resist :)

I have mediocre solves for all three and will chip away at them for the next few days. Would like to see a leaderboard though (just to make sure I finish ahead of Cousin Bisam).

I'm not even sure I will have a decent solve on level 3...
but I'll keep trying if you tease me.

These levels have been a lot of fun. There's one more point that I can't seem to tweak, but we'll see.

How many entrants are there jdel?

I'm glad you like the levels. I don't think of myself as a great level maker (at least not for this type of competition), so the feedback is great.

So far I've only gotten entries from you, jompy, ID, and Mag. I'm sure more will trickle in here in the last couple days. At least, I hope so :)

These comps really are fun, I'd to play in one again soon too. We really should make an effort to have someone hosting one more often.

It's a big part of FC history, and, well, a 1 week all or nothing comp can be easier to focus your effort on than some of these month (or more) long elimination epics (which I love, too).

Yea, it's too bad that HAP comps have all but disappeared. They're what FC was founded on and really test a contraptioners skill.

After this comp is over, how about you (jdel), ID36 and I each create a level and have a HAP comp that we can all compete in. We'd need a host to submit solves to, someone obviously not in the comp, but that would be fun so we could all compete along with anyone else.
