While America whined about Casey Anthony, sunscreen laws, and inflatable pools, this is what Ishinomaki (the site where the Japanese tsunami and earthquake struck several months ago) looked like on July 3rd.

Yep. My girlfriend just got back from helping out there and the pictures were pretty horrifying. This is probably a better representation of the damage if you weren't familiar with the area before the quake: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011 ... unami.html . Even the place where they were volunteering was a large gravel area that looked like a parking lot but was the location where a little more than a dozen houses stood a couple months ago.
